{"id":24215,"date":"2021-06-21T23:29:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-21T21:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dgcine.gob.do\/?p=24215"},"modified":"2024-01-22T23:38:13","modified_gmt":"2024-01-22T22:38:13","slug":"truth-justice-and-the-dominican-way-nine-dominican-republic-projects-pitched-at-cannes-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dgcine.gob.do\/en\/truth-justice-and-the-dominican-way-nine-dominican-republic-projects-pitched-at-cannes-market\/","title":{"rendered":"Truth, Justice and the Dominican Way: Nine Dominican Republic Projects Pitched at Cannes Market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Water pollution, organ harvesting and the complex relationships between mothers and daughters were among the subjects to emerge from the Dominican Republic pitching sessions that took place live on Wednesday afternoon during the second day of Cannes\u2019 Film Market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nine feature projects were presented at the session, which was organized by the DR\u2019s film commission, in a bid to attract sales agents, investors and co-producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among them was environmental thriller \u201cCandy Town,\u201d which follows four female friends as they attempt to prevent an industrial company from polluting a nearby river that is contaminating the village\u2019s crucial pineapple crops. While the women come up with a plan to seek justice, they risk both their lives and their futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the film\u2019s director and producer Yanillys Perez, the film, which has been earmarked for a 2022 shoot, was developed in Cannes four years ago at L\u2019Atelier Cinefoundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far 60% of the film\u2019s Euro 891,000 ($1.05 million) budget has been secured thanks to a DR Cinema Law Art fund and the backing of Ibermedia and the project is seeking 39% of funding from international co-producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A crusade for justice of a different kind is behind director Flavio Pedota\u2019s \u201cTiempo de Cosecha\u201d (\u201cHarvest Time\u201d). The story follows a group of DR journalists on their way back from covering the 2010 Haiti earthquake who happen upon an organ trafficking plant which sees young children held at a warehouse against their will in the border town of Saint Pierre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/MORENA.jpg?w=207\" alt=\"Lazy loaded image\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Morena.&nbsp;Courtesy of DGCINE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pedota also wrote the script and the producer attached is David Ferreira. According to the latter, the film \u2013 which will be shot on location on the Dominican Haiti border \u2013 will take five weeks with an additional six-week rehearsal period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHarvest Time\u201d is looking for a co-producer as well as funding to secure the cast \u2013 30% of which they hope will come from Spain to raise the film\u2019s international appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Desiree Diaz Silva has worked on more than 20 productions as a writer and producer, the DR-Italian copro \u201cMorena\u201d is her first turn in the director\u2019s chair and she was at today\u2019s session to land an international distributor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The film, which won in the development category of Ibermedia 2020, follows the story of a woman who returns to her fishing village after 10 years to reclaim her daughter from her mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resulting tensions between the two women are so high that the daughter runs away and the two women are forced to put their differences aside to try and find her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other producers on board are Carol Hererra and Sarah Perez and the copro deal with Italy for the post via Coralmente Films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other pitches included feature documentary \u201cNi\u00f1as Escarlata,\u201d Paula Curry\u2019s intimate portrait of three anonymous DR women who humanize the experience of abortion, which is illegal in their country. Curry has orchestrated an integrated social media campaign&nbsp; around the subject, which has helped with casting and she is looking to onboard co-producers as well as secure finance from film funds that support women and social issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another documentary pitch from the DR is Violeta Lockhart\u2019s \u201cAs\u00ed Ganamos\u201d (\u201cThis Is How We Win\u201d) which charts the electoral success of a 31-year-old outsider who challenged Latin American corruption and won against all the odds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The film which is being produced through DR\u2019s Minervas Producciones has secured funds for development and is looking to secure a sales agent ahead of its production this October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Pitching-Sessions-copia.jpg\" alt=\"Lazy loaded image\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Source:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/film\/global\/dominican-projects-pitched-cannes-market-1235014713\/\">Variety<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Water pollution, organ harvesting and the complex relationships between mothers and daughters were among the subjects to emerge from the Dominican Republic pitching sessions that took place live on Wednesday afternoon during the second day of Cannes\u2019 Film Market.
