M. Night Shyamalan<\/a> left an audience of Tribeca Festival attendees wanting more on Friday evening, specifically with regard to his upcoming film Old<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An adaption of Frederik Peeters and Pierre Oscar L\u00e9vy\u2019s graphic novel Sandcastle<\/em>, Old<\/em> follows a family on a tropical holiday, who discover that the secluded beach where they\u2019re relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly, reducing their entire lives into a single day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cNo one has ever seen anything like it \u2014 in its tone and the way it\u2019s just, I mean, it\u2019s like nothing else,\u201d Shyamalan said, sitting alongside one of Old<\/em>\u2018s stars, Alex Wolff.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The intriguingly vague comment about the film was one of many made by the director \u2014 \u201cinappropriate\u201d and \u201csubversive\u201d were other terms thrown out \u2014 throughout his 60-minute conversation with Wolff, though the ambiguity could be due in part to the fact that Old<\/em>, set for a July 23 release, isn\u2019t quite finished yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cI\u2019m deciding on the minor note; how to end on a minor note,\u201d Shyamalan explained, citing the final moments of 2000\u2019s Unbreakable<\/em> and Samuel L. Jackson\u2019s character Elijah Price as an example. \u201cUnbreakable<\/em> ends on a kind of a dip, right? He goes to the dark note, that minor note at the end. The guy you thought was the best friend is the villain. \u2026 The minor note sticks to you forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s no telling where the filmmaker, who\u2019s developed a reputation as the master of the twist ending, will take Old<\/em>, but Shyamalan did note that the flick will be finished in a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Already, Old<\/em> seems to hold a special place in Shyamalan\u2019s heart. He grouped it with Unbreakable<\/em> and Lady in the Water<\/em> as being the most \u201chim\u201d films, as Wolff put it. On top of that, the movie\u2019s focus on aging reminds him of his father and other loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cMy father\u2019s very old right now. He has dementia. He comes and goes,\u201d Shyamalan said. \u201cAnd the kids are now directing and singing concerts and, you know, when did this happen? So I made a movie about that feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This, of course, was no small feat in a global pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cWe all went to the Dominican [Republic], and at that time, the way we were making the movie was very new,\u201d Shyamalan recalled. \u201cI was making up the rules because I was the first one, so I said, \u2018We\u2019re all gonna stay in this hotel. I\u2019m gonna pay for everybody\u2019 \u2014 the cleaning ladies, the caterers, everyone, the reception person, the person parking our cars, everybody staying with us \u2014 and if they commit to these 10 weeks, I\u2019ll cover everything and we just go from the hotel to the beach, back and forth, every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Shyamalan\u2019s approach seemed to work, as he claimed \u201cwe didn\u2019t have a single positive [COVID-19] case\u201d the entire shoot. What did<\/em> threaten the film was something entirely different: hurricane season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cBecause of people\u2019s schedules, I couldn\u2019t have this cast if I waited,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd so I made the choice, just thinking about what\u2019s important to me. And honestly, it was because I wanted to make this movie with [this cast] that I took the risk. We took the risk. And, of course, there was a hurricane, and it just took the sets and just destroyed them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The crew was ultimately tasked with rebuilding everything, but there was still another obstacle to overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThe beach had been eroded away,\u201d Shyamalan revealed. \u201cThere was no beach for our beach movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

His solution? Working at the behest of nature and nature alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cWe got very lucky. By day one, part of the beach came back, so we shot on that side and then we became very versed with nature, like the tides and storms out 100 miles away and how many times the water comes up per day,\u201d Shyamalan said. \u201cHonestly, we were allowed to be on that beach. That was Mother Nature allowing us to be there. We had 40, I don\u2019t know, 40 days where we needed good weather\u2014we got 40 days of good weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

On the last day of shooting, the cast and crew even paid their respects to the beach with a ceremony they learned about from locals. As Wolff recalled, \u201cWe did this one ritual at the end. I was like, \u2018God, I don\u2019t know any other filmmaker who would take the space so seriously to go and drop off flowers in the ocean.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wolff stayed otherwise tight-lipped about Old<\/em>, simply telling the crowd, \u201cGet ready.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
