Despite a pandemic production shutdown from March to July, the Dominican Republic<\/strong> is on track for a record $80m<\/strong> in annual local spend on production boosted by a number of international features including M Night Shyamalan\u2019s Old<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By December 31<\/strong> the Caribbean<\/strong> locale will have hosted 28 film and TV shoots, of which eight were international.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The $80m<\/strong> figure has soared past the previous highest level of $30m set in 2017<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides Old<\/em><\/strong>, which wrapped several weeks ago and will open via Universal<\/strong>, there is Mark Wahlberg<\/strong> adventure Arthur The King<\/em><\/strong>, which Lionsgate<\/strong> has for the US<\/strong> and Sierra\/Affinity<\/strong> sells internationally, and Lionsgate\u2019s<\/strong> action-comedy Shotgun Wedding<\/em><\/strong> starring Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Reynolds <\/strong>and Armie Hammer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last two projects are both currently in pre-production on the island and scheduled to start production soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dominican production incentive is a 25% transferable tax credit on local spend that includes any international spend through the Dominican production services partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Film commissioner Yvette Marichal<\/strong> is exploring the possibilitly a higher incentive with the entertainment-friendly president Luis Abinader<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inward investment numbers come as Dominican Republic<\/strong>, like everywhere else, continues to adapt to the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThis [pandemic] has been horrible for everyone but the fact we have had Covid under control means the numbers in the second wave have gone down and remain down,\u201d Marichal<\/strong> told Screen<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat has a lot to do with it, and our location \u2013 getting here is relatively easy [for US companies].\u201d Everybody is working in a bubble and they do not leave for any reason.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Marichal<\/strong> added that film authorities are in early talks with producers in the hope of bringing back Geechee<\/em><\/strong>, the independent supernatural feature that shut down in early September when undercover drug enforcement officers chased and shot at crew members on a scout in a case of mistaken identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cIt was very unfortunate circumstances in the middle of everything that was going on,\u201d the film commissioner said of the incident. \u201cAs a country, we feel there was no excuse for agents to shoot. I knew people on the production were frightened and that was no way to behave. The good news is we are in conversations to try to get them to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe usually converge with every agency in the country we don\u2019t usually talk to the drug enforcement agency but since the incident, we let them know everything that\u2019s going on. We\u2019re doing what we can to make sure this never happens again.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Rep\u00fablica Dominicana en camino de alcanzar el r\u00e9cord de 80 millones de d\u00f3lares, este a\u00f1o, en gasto local de producciones extranjeras (exclusivo)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pesar del cierre de producciones por la pandemia de marzo a julio, la Rep\u00fablica Dominicana<\/strong> est\u00e1 en camino de lograr un r\u00e9cord en gasto local anual de 80 millones de d\u00f3lares<\/strong> en producci\u00f3n, impulsado por una serie de pel\u00edculas internacionales, como \u201c<\/strong>Old\u201d<\/em><\/strong> de M Night Shyamalan<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Para el 31 de diciembre<\/strong>, la Rep\u00fablica Dominicana<\/strong> habr\u00e1 sido la locaci\u00f3n de 28 rodajes de pel\u00edculas, series y programas de televisi\u00f3n, de los cuales ocho fueron internacionales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

La cifra de $80 millones<\/strong> ha superado el nivel m\u00e1s alto anterior de $30 millones<\/strong> establecido en 2017<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
