Pic is slated for completion by winter 2024, in time for the festival circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently filming in the Dominican Republic, the queer coming-of-age horror pic stars<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Camila Issa (Nickelodeon\u2019s \u201cAre You Afraid of the Dark\u201d) Cecile van Welie (San Sebastian\u2019s New Directors Award winner \u201cCarajita\u201d) and Camila Santana (Berlinale Generation\u2019s \u201cRamona\u201d) as well as newcomer Gabriela Cort\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>In \u201cNo salgas,\u201d van Welie portrays Liz, a college student grappling with her sexual identity. While on a weekend break with friends, she becomes the focal interest of a supernatural force that targets queer individuals in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe dynamics of coexistence and power have always favoured a heteronormative society. The Dominican Republic is highly conservative, which only highlights the inadequacy of the concept of an \u2018ally,\u2019 an idea that in \u2018No salgas\u2019 is more performative than supportive, and often does not stem from genuine understanding, but from reflexive tolerance,\u201d said Linares, adding: \u201cThe ally can be understanding and, at the same time, contribute, out of ignorance, to oppressive social environments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alief also handled the distribution of Linares\u2019 neo-realist docu-fiction pic, \u201cRamona,\u201d which made its world debut at Berlinale\u2019s Generation in 2023 before screening at BFI London and IDFA. The film won the Grand Prix Documentaire at Cin\u00e9latino 2024. \u201cRamona\u201d was officially released in the U.K. in April 2024 by Aya Films and indie streaming platform, MUBI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMeeting Victoria last Berlinale when we launched \u2018Ramona\u2019 changed my impressions of Latinx; she\u2019s the most exciting Latin American writer-director I\u2019ve met in the past decade and such a joy to work with,\u201d said Govea, adding: \u201cAnd we love working with women at the helm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo salgas\u201d marks Linares Villegas\u2019 debut in fiction filmmaking and her first collaboration with Marranzini as co-writers and producing partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alief defines itself as a hybrid entity encompassing media sales, production, and distribution.
