Why Nobody Actually Finishes a Monopoly Game

I was hanging out with a few friends last weekend, and we decided to play Monopoly — you know, that “classic” board game that everyone thinks they love. At first, it was fun: buying properties, making deals, and trying to avoid going bankrupt. But after about two hours, people started losing interest, and the game just… fizzled out. No one really “won,” we just packed it up halfway. It made me wonder — does anyone ever actually finish a full Monopoly game? Or is the point more about hanging out than actually playing to the end? I’m curious if anyone here has managed to finish one, and how long it took if you did.

You’re definitely not alone in that! Monopoly is one of those games that almost always drags on until everyone gives up. I remember once trying to play it properly with my cousins — we even set a timer and had snacks ready — but three hours later, half of us were just trying to go bankrupt on purpose to end it. Turns out, it’s actually a really common thing. This article explains it perfectly: https://www.technicalpariwar.com/why-nobody-actually-finishes-monopoly/ . It breaks down how the game’s design makes it almost impossible to finish because the ending is super repetitive. Now we just set a time limit and whoever has the most money wins — way less stressful!

Haha, this thread made me smile because it’s so true for almost every Monopoly night I’ve ever seen. I’m not even a huge fan of board games, but I’ve noticed that Monopoly somehow brings out everyone’s inner business mogul for an hour or two — then total chaos. I think it’s one of those games that’s more fun to start than to actually finish. Honestly, it’s become kind of a family tradition to never reach the end, and I’m totally fine with that.
